When it comes to orthodontics, many adults and teens prefer Invisalign braces to traditional metal braces. It’s no wonder, given the discreet appearance and convenience of the removable aligners. You may be wondering if you’re a candidate. Many, though not all, smiles can benefit from Invisalign. When you visit Designer Family Dental for a FREE consultation, our dentists will determine if yours is one of them! They will examine you and consider many factors, including:
- Your age
- Your orthodontic problems
- Dental restorations
- Your self-discipline
We May Not Recommend Invisalign Braces for Young Children
Typically our preference is to use Invisalign orthodontics for patients who are no longer experiencing growth in their jaw and who have all of their permanent (adult) teeth. Depending on the condition of wisdom teeth, it may be best to remove them prior to treatment. Our dentists can perform this procedure, if needed. If a teenage Invisalign patient doesn’t have their wisdom teeth yet, we will keep a close eye on them during the course of treatment.
Invisalign Treatment Can Solve Many – Though Not All – Problems
Invisalign was originally marketed as an alternative to metal braces for adults with minor orthodontics issues. Since then, however, the treatment has improved tremendously. It now can and is used to correct many common problems – including underbite, crossbite, gaps between teeth, overbite, and crowded teeth.
Still, the severity of your issues can affect Invisalign’s ability to correct them. In particular, Invisalign braces may not be able to:
- Close big gaps between teeth
- Effectively move teeth that are rotated or tilted
- Grip onto very rounded, short, or pointy teeth
Certain Restorations Can Affect Invisalign
Not all dental restorations are a problem, but our dentists will need to factor them in when creating your treatment plan. The placement of dental implants or dental bridges may make it harder than usual to use Invisalign. Our dentists will consider several factors, including how many restorations you have, where they are located in your mouth, and how big they are.
Once you begin wearing Invisalign braces, you must hold off on having any restoration work done. Since aligners are so precisely made, work on just one tooth can affect the ability of your aligners to move teeth into their proper position.
Invisalign Braces Require Self-Discipline
Patients love the ability to remove their Invisalign braces. It gives you the ability to eat whatever you want, without worrying about food getting stuck in metal braces. The removable aligners also make it simpler to brush and floss your teeth.
But the ease of removing them makes it tempting to do so often or leave them out for lengthy periods. Unfortunately, if you don’t keep your aligners in at least 20 hours a day, it can lengthen your treatment time. We advise removing them only for meals. Also dark liquids can stain your aligners, so you must remove them when drinking coffee, soda, or similar beverages. It’s best to switch to water or other clear liquids. Bonus: drinking more water improves your overall health!
You must also wear each set of aligners in the proper sequence, for the amount of time we recommend (usually two weeks). If it will be tough for you to keep track of your aligners’ sequence or wear them enough, you’ll want to discuss this with your dentists.
