Quick answer: This patient came to Designer Family Dental, which serves Delray Beach and Boca Raton, FL, because the direct composite bonding on their upper teeth had fractured and looked worn and discolored. Dr. Nameeta Idnani replaced it with nine custom porcelain veneers on teeth #5 through #13, giving the whole visible smile even edges, natural proportions and one bright, stain-resistant shade. Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years or longer with good care.

The problem: failing composite bonding
Years earlier, this patient’s upper teeth had been restored with direct composite bonding, a tooth-colored resin that is sculpted onto the teeth in the chair. Bonding can look good when it is new, but composite is softer than porcelain and slowly absorbs stains. By the time the patient came to see us, you can see in the before photo that:
- The bonding had fractured, leaving chipped, uneven biting edges on the front teeth
- It had turned yellow-gray and no longer matched the neighboring teeth
- The teeth had different lengths and shapes, so the smile looked uneven and older than the patient
Repairing the bonding again would only have been a short-term fix. Whitening could not help either, because whitening does not change tooth shape and does not lighten composite.
The treatment: nine porcelain veneers on teeth #5 to #13
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of dental porcelain that are bonded to the front of the teeth. They are stronger and much more stain resistant than composite, and they reflect light much like natural enamel.
Dr. Nameeta planned nine veneers, from the upper right first premolar (#5) to the upper left second premolar (#13). That covers every upper tooth that shows in this patient’s smile, so the new veneers would not sit next to older, darker teeth. The smile design had three goals:
- Even edges: rebuild the fractured and worn biting edges so the teeth line up
- Natural proportions: give the front teeth a balanced width and length that suits the patient’s face and lips
- One bright, uniform shade: a consistent color across all nine teeth that resists staining
How the veneer process works
- Consultation and smile design. We examine your teeth and gums, take photos and scans or impressions, and talk about the shape and shade you want.
- Removing old bonding and preparing the teeth. The teeth are numbed, any old composite bonding is carefully removed, and a thin layer of enamel is gently reshaped so the veneers sit naturally. You leave with temporary veneers.
- Custom fabrication. A dental laboratory crafts your porcelain veneers to the approved design.
- Bonding. We check the fit and color, then bond the veneers in place and polish them.
The result
The after photo shows all nine teeth with straight, even edges, natural-looking shapes and one bright, uniform shade from premolar to premolar. Unlike the old bonding, porcelain resists the coffee, tea and red wine stains that discolored the patient’s previous restorations, and it is far less likely to chip.
Bonding vs. porcelain veneers vs. crowns
| Composite bonding | Porcelain veneers | Crowns | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small chips or gaps on one or two teeth | Chips, stains, worn or uneven teeth, and replacing failed bonding | Teeth that are cracked, heavily filled or weak |
| Typical lifespan | About 5 to 10 years | About 10 to 15+ years | About 10 to 15+ years |
| Stain resistance | Can stain over time | Highly stain resistant | Highly stain resistant |
| Chip resistance | Lower | Higher | Higher |
| Tooth reshaping | Little or none | Thin layer of front enamel | All sides of the tooth |
| Visits | Usually one | Usually two to three | Usually two |
Are porcelain veneers right for you?
You may be a good candidate for veneers if you have:
- Old composite bonding that has chipped, fractured or yellowed
- Chipped, cracked or worn front teeth
- Stains that do not respond to professional whitening
- Small gaps, uneven lengths or teeth that are slightly out of line
Veneers are not the best choice for everyone. Teeth with active decay or gum disease need to be treated first, and patients who grind heavily may need a night guard. Dr. Nameeta will tell you honestly whether veneers, bonding, whitening, clear aligners or crowns are the best fit.

Frequently asked questions about veneers in Delray Beach and Boca Raton
Yes. The old bonding is carefully removed, the teeth underneath are checked and gently shaped, and custom porcelain veneers are bonded in its place. Porcelain is stronger and far more stain resistant than composite, so it is a common upgrade when bonding has chipped, fractured or discolored.
When you smile, the teeth from the premolars forward are usually visible. Treating teeth #5 through #13 gave the whole visible smile one consistent color, shape and edge line, so no older or darker teeth stand out next to the new veneers.
With good care, porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years or longer. Brushing twice a day, flossing, regular cleanings, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth all help them last.
No. Veneers protect the tooth underneath, but placing them usually means gently reshaping a thin layer of enamel (often around half a millimeter) so they sit naturally. That step is permanent, which is why we plan every case carefully and talk through all options first.
Most patients are comfortable throughout. The teeth are numbed while they are prepared, and any sensitivity afterward is usually mild and short-lived. We also offer comfort and sedation options for anxious patients.
Most veneer cases take two or three visits over a few weeks: a consultation and smile design, a preparation visit with temporary veneers, and a final visit to bond the custom porcelain veneers in place.
